The Banks have decided that cheques will be scrapped by 2018 and are already phasing out cheque guarantee cards. This will be really bad for small businesses like mine that rely on cheques both for mail order and face-to-face transactions. The alternative will be for all online customers to use PayPal, for which I shall have to increase my prices as I cannot absorb the extra cost, and at Fairs it will be cash only. How will mail order customers with no internet access manage? I am far from unique in this difficulty. Also consider charities. The large ones will be able to accept donations by card, but what about small local ones, like Scout groups, village halls and the like? Then there is the question of how does Auntie Pat in Glasgow send birthday money to little Johnny in Gloucester? Many older people are unhappy or unable to use 'plastic' due to sight or dexterity difficulties. The argument seems to be that by 2018 the present older generation will have died out, but they are forgetting that there will be more to take their place. We are likely to have to return to keeping and carrying large amounts of cash about - won't Burglar Bill be pleased with that? I hate to get 'political' but, if you agree with me that this is not right, please go and sign that Petition!

Unfortunately, all Petitions to No 10 have been suspended until the new government decides what to do with them. However, I will keep this link in place in hopes that you can try again at a later date.
